Near this town is one of those places which not every tourist would see. Some 7100 ft above sea level on the Palani hills lies in isolation, the breathtaking, man made Berijam lake. Access to this spot is restricted and controlled by the government. Prior permission is required to enter this place.
The Berijam Lake
So what is so special about this place that has got it this special status? They say the surrounding has a variety of fauna to be protected. I don’t buy this reason. The area is home to animals like bison, langur, deers, etc… These are not endangered species, then why restrict the area? Another reason they give is this lake is a water source a town nearby- Periyakulam town. What do they mean? The Berijam was made a restricted area only recently. Few years back it was open to all. Didn't the residents of Periyakulam drink water those days? I don’t get their point. But there’s one thing lingering in my mind… may be there’s a third reason, a reason not told to all but left to the understanding of those who can sense it- The Magic Mushrooms! How many of the 32,000 people in Kodaikanal know about these little mushrooms? I am sure it should be less than 5%. How many tourists who come to Kodai know about these mushrooms? Should be even lower.
The magic mushroom
These mushrooms are supposed to be nature’s answer to the king of the psychedelic drugs- Lysergic acid diethylamide or LSD as it is popularly known. On consumption, these mushrooms give you the same hallucinating effect which LSD gives, but in a “natural” manner or so to say, we are talking about a “herbal” psychedelic drug. The psilocybin contained in the mushroom gives it it’s hallucinating effect. An investigative journalist, Peter Gorman on his visit to Kodai asked the lady who sold to him, how many mushrooms to eat in order to get a high. The lady replies “Take three and enjoy the countryside, take six and talk with Shiva”. This shows the kind of hallucination it effects on a person. These do not grow in many places. Apart from Mexico and parts of Australia, the shola forest surrounding the berijam is the only home to magic mushrooms in India. On my visit to the Berijam last year I found nothing very “sacred” about the place to be preserved. It was a beautiful place mainly because there were no people around, otherwise it’s a very normal tourist spot. So my take is that the government wants to close the gates to people from consuming this illegal mushroom. Why else would a place which was open to all, get classified as a restricted area one fine day?
It’s the right thing to give this psilocybin mushroom a low profile and restrict access to it so as to keep it away from the common man’s hand. Otherwise, Berijam would be filled with hippies listening to The Beatles doping away to glory in their artificial heaven. But think of what we might be missing. The psilocybin has some amazing qualities. They are the only known cure (though not clinically proven) for diseases like cluster head-aches and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Do not confuse cluster head-aches with migraine. Cluster head-aches are less common but the effects are higher than migraine. The pain is excruciating, especially behind the eye. Patients say the pain is like tearing the eyelids and poking the eye balls with an ice pick, ripping off the forehead portion. Experts say this is the most severe pain known to medical science. There are medicines that reduce the cycle of this head-ache but psilocybin is known to put a stop to it when taken in the right conditions and right dosage.
So why shouldn’t the government try and do a research on these mushrooms? Maybe it has more medicinal values than we know! If we can make medicines for rare diseases with these mushrooms, apart curing providing cure, we can also add some revenue to our economy by exporting medicines. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University already has a research institute in the Berijam. Why don’t they try and find out more about these mushrooms than just locking them inside? After all R&D is the only way to boost the growth of any economy. I do not think our red taped government personnel will ever think of researching much, let alone the magic mushrooms. To think of it, the world is filled with lots and lots of amazing things, sometimes very close to us. Our eyes are too busy seeing the regular stuff that it misses these little wonders of nature.
(By the way, to all the dopies who come across this post- Please DO NOT go snooping for the mushrooms in Kodai. I've heard that the police have spies all around the place. Psilocybin Mushrooms are illegal and banned. If the cops pick you with a mushroom they will beat you up black and blue. Also, if you do not know to pick, you will end up picking poisonous mushrooms. Berijam is full of poisonous look alikes.)
Mate you have got it all wrong. The area comes under reserve forest and hence entry is restricted. You can go in with permission from forest ranger office at kodaikanal
ReplyDeleteBTW, even with restricted access, people have littered the place
you can see some of my kodaikanal pictures at http://www.kodaikanalhotels.com/
Best regards
Bala
Maybe. Sorry if I am wrong. When i went, i was the only one to get permission. Everyone else was turned down. I know restricting access to few forest areas is really good and i support it too.I know it helps in reducing pollution, maintain ecological balance, blah blah blah... all that i agree. But the essence of my post was not to whether allow access or not to this place. My point was there should be more research done in psilocybin and see if there are more uses to it.
ReplyDeleteraga u have somehow unwittingly become a proponent of legalising psychadelic drugs like marijuana, not in the sctrictest sens, but somewhat. People who lobby for legalization of marijuana, quote the same facts that you do. That it helps in reducing pain and eases out the difficulties of terminally ill patient and also to be used in research. they want it to be legalized at least in medical use and research, which is also banned by the government.
ReplyDeleteAdditional info : they also use the fact that it is less addictive and less dengerous that cigarettes in their lobby
well if u donno ambarish... it is actually right :) and yeah less addictive than nicotine and yeah even caffeine..

I am not too sure about medicinal uses of psilocybin, but it might help in the field of psychiatry....and regarding shrooms if anyone goes around picking them out of curiosity and pops them in his/her mouth is an idiot. Thousands to go Kodaikanal each year just for shrooms (trust me you wont find them in plain sight, but you will be astonished by the huge amount that travel from bangalore, bombay and chennai to kodai just to trip on shrooms)...if you know where to get it you'll find it...dealers only approach people who look like they would be interested, however buying shrooms in the city is not very advisable because 1 - they will be laced with chemicals, 2 - cop trouble. Research on this matter will definitely be useful, however once any object is slapped with a 'drug' tag its very difficult to convince a government to conduct any kind of research.
ReplyDeleteNamaste,
ReplyDeleteRagav cheers and thanks for such a wonderful post brother. This might help you all to figure out the evolution we are going through and realize the basics of human psyche. By the way it is time for us all to remove the ideas behind psychedelics as drugs basically formed by social conditioning.

ReplyDeletehello,
ReplyDeletethanks for this post Ragav. i'v been to Kodaikanal a couple times but missed out on picking mushrooms. it is something i really really have been waiting to do. however i am aware of the police crackdown and paranoia has gotten the better of me on previous occasions.
I am quite determined however to do the needful on my upcoming trip this year end. i just need to know for sure that the shola area, near berijam is where you go picking right? of course i will take a local, but also are there other areas you know about where i may pick shrooms.
thanks again,
Peace

@ Hannah the observatory area which has lots of green grass area has many shroomz to pick when the timing is rite try 4am to 6am best time to pick.... and 5pm to 7pm again, this is when they are popping out. as for the dose my minimum doze till date has been 12 mushrooms and the max has been 120. I guess the best doze to feel the trip is around 2 to 3 dozens at best try 2 if you want more then go for the third, again this varies on the size of the shrooms wether they are fresh or dried and what are they being consumed with my dealer used to say mushy some power, honey some power, both together full power! wont forget that one ever! haha, well he's no more and i don't know if his son is running or intends on running the business. Some of the old guys Jairam might be there, even if he's not dealing nemore due to the heavy cop scene and the narcs his place is worth a visit just to look at all the trippy things hippies from the past have written on the walls..... there is this guy Silly(name changed) who pretends to not be able to hear and has a hearing machine who makes those handshake with eternal self finger rings and bracelets made outta copper and can be seen on almost everyone who knows the scene. I had a few lost them. have one thats made of gold now..... more noble metal! Berijam is heaven on earth and one can pick eat and do everything they want there but be sure you know what your picking! I also feel the photo in this blog is that of an imposter but again it also looks very natural, one way to fin out is the bottom of the umpbrella is always black! Lets face it weed and anything that helps you trip has already been termed a drug if not worse and the more things come out the law is only going to crackdown stronger! If you really feel for the subject it would've been best if you didn't post everything out here straight and kept it a little secret! I mean its people like you who like to publicize everything that comes their way who end up being the cause of the rules that are made and enforced! I'm 26, I was a kodai frequenter from 14 to 21 until the scene got real real sad and even staying at a village or hut near by or green's for that matter could invoke suspiscion and even worse maybe questioning! I'm glad you got permission to see heaven on Earth! but its sad despite knowing the pressures for permissions to visit the place and knowing everyone but you were turned down to visit the place you still end up writing this post so people become more aware and restrict going there further...... I really want to ask what have you really achieved by putting this post out here on the internet? you've helped create more awareness about something very beautiful which has been termed a drug. None the less its termed a drug and is prohibited. More people know and knowing the world and the people in it, the substance is shunned by everyone as it is a drug! how many people who advocate against marijuana have actually smoked it? Do you know why marijuana is illegal. try finding this The.Union.The.Business.Behind.Getting.High.2007.PROPER.DVDRip.XviD-VH-PROD
ReplyDelete5000 monkeys were killed to make marijuana illegal! a mask with no outlet for air or oxygen and only smoke was placed around their faces and they all died, well anyone will as the smoke becomes CO2 and causes death. It is a "drug" as people have named it that can very well be the answer to many terminal illnesses alupathic drugs have not been able to cure but only control. It can produce the toughest fibre for canvas and cloth! and there is so much more to it I might have to live the rest of my life explaining!
12 years ago we used to pick everywhere and not have tension of cops! I remember my first time when I started buzzing I was laughing at all the cops I saw and also asked a few to shove their head in them cows a**holes! haha!
continuation to post above.....
ReplyDeletenow if I go I will have to take a room in kodai and be all secretive about what i'm doing where am going and who i'm meeting and after all that someone might still tip me off to get some extra bucks or to throw me in jail as they have quotas of criminals caught and they can't really catch the hard ass criminals and people like you and me become their best targets.
Go to kodai! be secretive, try picking! look around, don't be overtly friendly, there's this funny guy yasser arafat and he might just bump into you. I know the name sounds familiar its the name of a president of a country somewhere on the globe! I can give you a hint! the hint is butterfly.... I won't say more cause the scene spells life to me! I am no mad tripper and neither do I say do these things and do them in excess till you waste your lives! sorry no sir! / no madam!
However what I do urge you to look at is alcohol causes more number of deaths across the world and so does asprin when compared to weed or mushies! These are facts! why don't you consider these before completely shunning away these substances just because they have been labled drug by governments! who made those governments? people, who are they made for the people and the constitute us the people so when we have things like RTI etc. why don't we use it! why was Marijuana made illegal! the real answer is to fill politicians pockets and fund government revenues by not impacting the pharmaceutical industry! Its the simple blatant truth and cannot get more simpler! Why is alcohol legal when it takes more lives than anything else on the planet? The reason is because the 95% of people who are not aware of these things or have never tried these things are completely ignorant and take things at face value they believe the government is right and the decision of making the substance illegal is right! and thats why they are loosers cause if the government starts selling you shit which is genetically modified food with animal enzymes in it you will buy it cause the government says its ok! btw the bill is being passed on the 24th of July and most of the food available is going to be in organic or hybrid! these food substances cause cancer after prolonged consumption for years! but you guys will say ok and eat it...... why not question things? try and stop the passing of bills become more involved as an activist! India is the most corrupt country people use this for so many things why not use the same to try and make changes to the law?! why not legalize marijuana and ban alcohol? These are questions asked only by people like me who dared to try something that was illegal and then made our decisions if the thing is good or bad! I smoke weed everyday! I am the best performer at work! I am relaxed throughout the day! I don't get violent as opposed to people under the influence of alcohol and I'm sane enough to write this piece! I've been smoking since I was 12 years old which means 2 years more than half my life! I am alive an I exist! sad part is with the way everyones behaving me or people like me are only reducing over the generations and might eventually cease to exist!
But its all good! Ragav will still get many hits on his blog and some more of the most interesting things on the planet will be termed a drug outright!
I hope you enjoyed my post and no thanks for ruining the scene further!
Regardless,
OM (another name for the lord of the universe)
I thoroughly enjoyed your post!!
DeleteFantastic piece of writing!!
There's just too many "!" in your post.
DeleteYou are aware of the fact that there are other types of punctuation, like commas, semicolons and full-stops, right?
Well said bro, destroying the gift of god. Stop posting about such beautiful things and making them public.
DeleteWow, that makes total sense now. I was wondering why my stoner friends were so interested in getting to Kodai.

ReplyDeleteLOL! they are fungi grow from pores not seeds the only way to grow them is to get fresh ones to areas where the temperature is right and there's enough of grass which creates misture for them to grow! you can't just grow them anywhere you need specific conditions for them to thrive, you can always find them on the internet there are places from which you can have the entire grow kit which constitutes of a bag and pores etc. I'd say the best thing to do is find big ass fresh mushrooms then take the button place it on 3 matchsticks to make like a tripod and place it on a thick card board, and cover it with a dish for a few seconds and then remove the disch again do this a few times and the entire card board will have many pores on it! you cannot see the pores as they are microscopic, however if you place the same cardboard in conditions that are fit for mushy to thrive you will see mushies sprouting on the cardboard itself once it gains enough moisture.
Seriously Mr.Anonymous, how dumb are you ? The Mushrooms which grow in kodai are natural and are caused by the resin from pine trees along with bison shit(nitrogen fixation in soil) and the correct temperature. These things grow overnight. Even if the government wants to do shit they can't. And please stop asking online like a dumb mo**er F*****r where to score ! If u score u SCORE...otherwise chuck it.
ReplyDeleteAnd for all other kodai enthusiasts , please keep the place neat and clean. Think even before throw a chocolate plastic wrap.
PEACE LOVE UNITY !
TURN ON , TUNE IN , DROP OUT !!!
